Nude Shoes!!!!

Hello Lovelies!
I pray that everyone had a wonderful weekend!  I enjoyed myself this weekend.  One of my friends had a baby shower for her soon-tobe little bundle of joy in blue, I went to another friends going away party, and as always a wonderful word today (Sunday).

Here are the shoes that were featured in my looks for the weekend:

I decided to wear this funky zebra print jumpsuit that I bought from H&M earlier this spring.  I dressed it up
with a blazer and sparkly belt....

I took the blazer off because it got way too hot!

Sunday's Best
Today I was truly blessed, as always, with a good word!  It was about activating our Faith and completely trusting God for everything.  We were also told how important it is to dedicate some time to just talk to the Lord everyday.  We get so "busy" with our everyday lives, that we make excuses when it comes to devoting time to building a stronger relationship with God.  Church is always so refreshing and a perfect way to start any week.
Here's what I wore today:

Polka dots are cool!

Everyone have a FABULOUS week and remember to set a little time aside to spend talk to God! :)

National Hamburger Day!

Hey Guys!

So apparently yesterday was National Hamburger Day!!!! Who knew???  So I felt it not robbery to totally ruin my mornings workout with a big, juicy burger from Five Guys Burgers and Fries!!!
Their burgers were voted the best in Jacksonville and for Families, but let me tell you...I wasn't a big fan of theirs in the beginning.  When the first opened this particular spot about 2 or 3 years ago, I decided to give it a try because of the rave reviews I heard.  I was sorely disappointed!  When my parents came to visit 2 summers ago, my dad was craving a good burger so I decided to give them another go and was let down again.  Yesterday was the third go round and I guess the third time really is the charm because this burger was GREAT!

\
They typically have long lines and to keep you busy there are peanuts you can munch on!  You're welcomed to throw the shells on the floor....reminds me of Texas Roadhouse Steakhouse.

A super greasy brown paper bag can only mean delicious goodness to come.....RIGHT!?!!?!!!

RIGHT!!!  Considering my past few experiences with Five Guys, this trip was a winner!  The cajun seasoned fries were perfect!  The bacon was extra crispy on my Little Bacon Cheddar Burger (didn't look too little to me), and the burger itself was the perfect juiciness!

I'll definitely be back to Five Guys again!

Talk to you later!

A Story of Transition: Jasmine

Ladies, meet Jasmine! A natural hair transitioner with a pretty awesome story, I hope you all enjoy it!

Please introduce yourself!
My name is Jasmine, I'm 22, I'm originally from West Virginia, but now I'm living in Nashville, TN. I'm currently majoring in Criminal Justice, & I'm an aspiring makeup artist.

When did you decide you wanted to transition to natural?
Well, I started watching YouTube videos about the subject. Eventually I came across this blog, & just started reading. However, I still wasn't 100% sold on the idea yet. I ended up having to stay in the hospital in early February of 2010, my nurse had locs. So I just started asking questions, & she was just happy to tell me everything I wanted to know. It was then and there that I realized that I was gonna go natural.

Do you plan on being a long term transitioner or a short term?
LONG TERM! I have a TON of respect for women who do the big chop. I've worn short hair before, but I didn't want it to be THAT short. So, I knew that I wanted to retain length. I'm currently 15 months in; I plan on cutting the relaxed ends off once I reach 24 months.

How has it been managing 2 textures throughout this journey of transition?
Sometimes it's a HASSLE! There's been times when I've wanted to just give up. One day I actually stopped by Sally's and bought a relaxer! Luckily, I didn't go through with it, lol.

Are there any products that you have been using that you cannot live without?
Safi Avocado Shea Butter, Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo, Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque, Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Conditioner, and good ol' fashioned Shea Butter.

Do you have your hair on a “regimen schedule?”
I co-wash & de-tangle with my Nourish Spa Conditioner twice a week (sometimes.) I wash with my Carol's Daughter shampoo twice a month. I DC using my Shea Moisture Masque adding in honey, jojoba oil, and vitamin e oil, under my dryer after every shampoo, I also try to henna once every 3 months.

What’s been your “go to” hairstyle since you’ve decided to go natural?
Twists, braids, and weaves! I don't like to manipulate my hair too much. When I give my hair a break from PT's, I moisturize and put it in a high bun, or in some two strand twists.

What excites you about seeing your natural, kinks, curls and coils?
Because they are MINE! I've had a perm from the age of 8, up until I was 21. I'm breaking free from the "Creamy Crack" and it feels so, so, good.

Where can we find you on the web?
You can find me on Twitter: @JayxChristine, I have a Tumblr: http://vivrant-thang.tumblr.com, and I also have a YouTube channel. I've been slacking on making videos, but you can check it out at:http://www.youtube.com/user/JayxSupreme.

Do you have any advice that you want to share with fellow transitioners?
All I want say is, hang in there. I know sometimes it will be a challenge, and you'll want to give up, but don't! There are so many resources available to you online. Whether you need to vent your feelings/frustrations, or if you're even having doubts, utilize those resources and others will listen and give you feedback. The natural hair community is like a "sisterhood". You'll always have someone there for you.
Thank you for having me Alex, I really appreciate it :)

Captured Curls: Jillz

So, I have been trying to get this cool chick on my blog for a while and she is FINALLY featured! Jillz is a very talented young lady with awesome curls and style. I hope you all enjoy her story as much as I did, enjoy!

Please, introduce yourself!
I'm Jillz but mostly known as Elle Maxwell (the lyricist). I'm a student, optimist, and most importantly an artist. Currently residing in Southeast, Washington, DC I'm trying to figure out where I fit into the script for this play called "Life".

What is your current hair care regimen?
My current hair regimen differs depending on which way I'm wearing my hair. Now that my hair is at a nice length since I went natural (again), I wear it straight majority of the time. When I do wear it this way I usually just wash with Creme of Nature Sunflower and Coconut Detangling Conditioning Shampoo, condition with Cantu Shea Butter Rinse Out Conditioner, then put Carol's Daughter Hair Balm on my hair (just a little) before I blow dry it and flat iron it. I don't like applying too much heat to my hair than needed so to keep up my style I either pin curl it or just wear a satin bonnet at night. My hair is also naturally thin so I tend to lean more towards the satin bonnet. It gives my hair a bump on the morning.

When my hair is in its natural state I wash with the Cream of Nature shampoo, condition with Cantu, then put on Creme of Nature Lemongrass & Rosemary Leave-in Creme Conditioner. To keep my curls I just add a layer of Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk.

What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?
I think some parts of my hair may be curlier than others but for the most part my hair type is 3c/4a. I find that the above products that I mentioned work best for my hair. Sometimes I may add a little Eco Styler Gel to the mix for my more natural/curly look or Curl Soufflé Medium Curl Cream. Although the Curl Soufflé smells sooo good (think cake batter), both products have the potential of drying out my hair so I use them sparingly. I also have a little spray bottle of water and olive oil to give my hair some moisture when needed.

What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural?
My boyfriend hated it, lol! I didn't care though because I loved it and my friends and family did as well. I just felt like my life became that much easier. Plus, I've always wanted to experiment with color so that made it a little easier to do.

Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?
I BC'd gradually, if that makes any sense. I'm always interested in new hairstyles, especially cuts, and my philosophy is "it's just hair, it'll grow back". So, I initially cut around the sides and back of my head and just had long hair on top. I hadn't gotten a perm for a while now so I had a pretty good length for a cute TWA. About a couple of weeks after I cut the sides and back of my hair off, I went and did the top. All of this happened between October and November of 2010.

What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?
I LOVE my kinks, curls, and coils because not only do they make me stand out in a club full of hair extensions and weave glue, but they actually make me feel better in my skin. Plus, they help me exercise my individuality and artsiness. Each curl accentuates the next just as each underlying skin tone compliments the other.

Where can we find you on the web?
I'm on Facebook under Elle Maxwell, my website is www.ElleMaxwell.com, my youtube channel is Jillz07, and you can follow me on Twitter @_ElleMaxwell.

Anything EXTRA you want us to know?
My first EP "RUSH" will be dropping VERY soon please check the website and Twitter feed for updates regarding that!!! :)

Guest Blogger: Bree of Art of Being Cool

I was contacted last night by Bree, who runs the Art of Being Cool blog, to see if I would be interested in having her as a guest blogger. I am always looking for new folks to guest blog; having other's peoples work and thoughts on my site helps keep the content interesting and fresh. So I checked out the post she wanted me to feature,I loved it and agreed to have her. I think that you ladies will really find Bree's post helpful, if I get a good response to her work I would love to have her guest blog on the regular. Don't forget to check out her blog, it's pretty cool! (No pun intended, LOL)  Enjoy the post!

Tired of hiding those zits? Well my fellow cool people, I have a very unusual yet valid home remedy to help you stay cool and help your face stay clear! What is it you may ask? OIL!
How many people imagined slapping thick oil on your already greasy face? I know that it sounds crazy, and I thought the same thing as well, until I tried it. As most of my readers know, I just started a new job. Well, the job is 8 hours of intense hard labor in harsh conditions, and my face and skin has gone haywire! So like most of us do, I hit the internet for a solution to my pimply skin, and one of the solutions that I found was using oil to wash your face instead of a harsh acne product. The articles reasoned that the reason that our skin makes oil is because we need it; however using harsh chemicals dries out our skin and makes it even more prone to breakouts. Using a penetrating oil, like olive oil or grapeseed oil (put away the vegetable oil!) to wash your face will give you smooth skin and within a matter of days, you'll see a difference. All of my little white head pimples were gone in 2 days (I kid you not!) I tried this on my brother, who has acne, for one day and after that one use, we could already seen a difference in his skin!

Have you/would you ever try the Oil Cleansing Method?

PRODUCT REVIEW: MAC Opulash Mascara

PRODUCT: 5/5
PACKAGING: 5/5
QUALITY: 5/5
GRADE: A
PRICE: $14 from MAC counters, stores, and maccosmetics.com
WOULD I REPURCHASE? Yes

WHAT MAC SAYS
Superlative style & state-of-the-art science merge. A new formula in a more saturated intense black with extra-volumization, expansion & curl delivered dramatically with our most bodacious brush yet. Lasts 15 hours!

PROS
+ Lengthening
+ Volumizing
+ Really lasts 15 hours!
+ More 'affordable' higher end mascara

CONS
- Brush may be too big for people with smaller lashes
- Can be a little difficult to come off

I've been using this mascara to the very end of its 3 month term and I love it! MAC mascaras get a lot of flack for not working to well but MAC's Plushlash has been my HG ever since I discovered it a few years ago. One of my MAC MUA's described Opulash as "Plushlash on crack" so I had to have it. But like most products, I was really skeptical in the beginning. I feel like a lot of gurus/bloggers say they "love" a product without thoroughly testing it or just saying it because they're sponsored but I feel like I'm the other way. I always dislike it in the beginning, keep using it because I don't wanna waste and discover I like it!

I have longer lashes so I appreciate a bigger brush, but it might be a problem for those of you with shorter, thinner lashes. The brush is pretty dense and I feel like it packs on a lot of mascara without clumping and adds a lot of length to my lashes. The tube itself is pretty big and even after 3 months, I think there's still a ton of product in there. MAC claims that it last 15 hours - and it definitely does for me! Sometimes I fall asleep with this mascara on - I know, it's bad! But don't act like you don't once in a while! - and it's still perfect when I wake up in the morning. In fact, its harder to take off then other mascaras. Usually my MAC wipes will take most of my mascara off, but I have to wash my eyes with baby shampoo to get these off.

I thought this review might be helpful since MAC is releasing their Opulash Optimum Black next month (but for $1 more!). At $14 a piece, it's one of the more affordable "higher end" mascaras which I think is pretty reasonable considering a lot of them are $20+. I think it's worth trying and I'll definitely be repurchasing this again.

The problem with Nigeria

I realize this title is provocative even if I've tweaked the title of an old monograph by Chinua Achebe.  But I've chosen this because I started this blog to focus on my interest in health in developing countries, and most importantly in Nigeria. I wanted to talk about things related to women, children, young people, infrastructure, workforce, etc. A few weeks into this, I realized my posts, both the ones I've written and posted and the ones I've drafted were nothing but doom and gloom. I had nothing positive to say, and I was having trouble finding anything positive to write about from my discussions with people.  So I broadened my topics to whatever I wanted to talk about. It had to be closer to home: friends, women I find inspiring, relationships, hair, and other social issues that are important to us.  It's been fun writing about these topics, and generating great interest from my readers.

So what is my problem with Nigeria?  Why did I stop writing about the place?

Well, let me start by saying that a few people I know have moved back to Nigeria or are in the process of doing so.  For them, this is the best move for their families both in the long and the short term. Otherwise, no one would move themselves, their children, their lives to another country if there were no long-term benefits to doing so.  But when I listen to the reasons some people have said is prompting their move, it gives me great pause (and honestly, concern).

Many are families with young children. We all know that life is difficult in the United States when you are raising small children. If you are doing everything you are supposed to do to maintain your family, as well as holding on to a full time job, then you have little time for leisure, fun, or anything else.  If you are paying for private school, given that we live on what we earn for the most part, then you are also out of money! It's a tough life. That's why most people (particularly middle class, educated couples with jobs) do not have more than two children. It's too much of an unpleasant stretch on available resources (time and money among others) to manage any more. So, given these difficulties, it does not surprise even me that young families would choose to move to Nigeria where they can get maids, drivers for themselves and their children, cooks, nannies, and any sort of available help you can imagine. One person has said she does not want to wipe another nose or change another diaper for as long as her kids are in that phase. Another one wants the kids bathed, dressed, and shipped off to their private school before she even wakes up in the morning.  And they have all returned to Nigeria.  It's tough to wipe every nose and change all diapers of course, particularly with a large family so who could blame them?

I didn't have children to shuffle them to several people to take care of, but a little help with mundane duties is of course a good thing. My problem is not with the easy life, per se.  No one won any award for doing every single thing yourself when it comes to child rearing.  My problem is with the societal conditions that make all the house help one can want cheap and readily available. (Notice I did not say easy; the problems house helpers can pose is a later conversation.) The society that creates--on one hand very few select people who are well connected, well paid, and well respected, and on the other hand, creates the vast  majority of people who have next to nothing-- is not a good society.  A society where the vast majority of people, regardless of their talents, can only hope to serve as another person's driver or maid because that is where their connections might lead them is not a good society.  It is not even on the path to becoming a decent society.  It is a society that creates a permanent underclass.

An example:  A typical driver who makes 10,000 naira a month  (about $66.00) in Nigeria.  He (haven't seen a woman yet but I'm sure there is one) is not planning nor hoping to send his many children to a good school on that monthly salary. He might spend his meager income to send the first boy to school and the other children will go without their education or they rely on the ever dwindling number of family members who are nice enough or have enough to chip in.  But his options do not include returning to school to obtain a degree in anything to get a better job.  He has watched most people who have degrees from the top universities in Nigeria land in nothing but permanent unemployment, and as long their parents are not well known and do not appear in the latest magazines, they will never be gainfully employed. When this driver speaks English, you realize within the first sentence that he is speaking the "queen's English." Refined. It is not by accident. He is probably well educated, but his fortune of being born in Nigeria has left him with no options other than to serve as a driver for a probably much younger man or woman (married), earning a wage that will not serve as a respectable shopping bill for the woman for the week.

By the way, how many generations will it take before a serious rebellion in some form begins to take hold? Think of armed robberies, hijackings, kidnappings, bombings that are commonplace in Nigeria. A permanent underclass if we know nothing else breeds unrest.

So, this is my problem with Nigeria.  It is great for some, and if I only talk to this moneyed group of people, I might believe it is like this for everyone.  In listening to those who love Nigeria and all the help you can get, their children are not destined for such occupations.  Several years ago on a visit to Nigeria, I was being driven by the driver of a relative to the market to buy a few things.  She first offered her maid to go to the market for me. I thanked her but declined; that would defeat the purpose of exploring the market for me. As I rode in the backseat, seatbelt absolutely fastened and praying to arrive at the market in one piece through the high speed insanity of Lagos highways, I thought about the fact that as much as I've driven in New York, DC, even a bit in London, they are all organized, and I could never drive in Lagos.  So if I had to live here, I thought, I would hope for a driver. As we approached the market, I began to see absolute and complete poverty. I realized then, that as comfortable as I was in the backseat of that shiny new air-conditioned car, the car fumes from other people's dying cars still managed to seep into our car and sting my eyes, and I am still surrounded by absolute desperation no matter how much I willed it to go away. I don't have the heart to say that this is okay or good enough just because my own children will not be subject to penury for the majority of their lives.

So I have asked some friends to tell me what I might be missing in talking about good things that are happening in Nigeria.  I haven't come up with much on my own. I'm not cool enough to blog about the music, art or club scenes. Someone else can take that up.  There's nothing but bad news on the academic scene; we see enough horror stories from supposed graduates of Nigerian universities here in the United States so no need to delve into that.  When and if I can find out more about these great things people bring to my attention, I will write about them.  If I can't find any information, I won't blog about them being good things.  If it is anything like "we have electricity because we have generators and we are rich enough to buy the quiet ones" then I'll blog about how many people died due to generator fumes entering their homes as they slept wiping out entire families.  Just to keep things in perspective.

You are my Sunshine!!!!!

Hey Dolls,

My boyfriend and I went out last night and I wanted to show you guys what I decided to wear.  BUT before I do that, I've got a question.....Do you ever look in your closet full of clothes and shoes and say "Man! I don't have anything to wear!" ?  Sad to say I have this moment often.  What a shame...I know.

Anywho, here's what I came up with:
Photobucket
  • Leopard Print Blazer:  Steinmart
  • Denim Dress:  Ross
  • Heels:  Penny Loves Kenny via MJM Designer Shoes

Protective Style Challenge

As many of you know, I've been wearing protective styles for months now. Since about December I have tried to wear my hair (95% of the time) in low maintenance styles that include wearing my ends protected, tucked, ect. By December this year I hope to be at or close to arm pit length when my hair is stretched. I definitely think that it's possible to attain and retain that goal and hair length.

I am inviting you ladies to join me in a 3 month PS challenge! (I will keep up the PS challenge after the 3 months is over-- you are welcomed to as well).
This challenge will be simple, fun and a way for us to come together and "fellowship" in a positive way while uplifting one another on our growth journeys. Whether you are growing out a TWA, a bad hair cut, dye job or just want to set a hair goal for yourself and reach it-- you are all welcomed! If this is something you'd be interested in click the jump for details.

(image from google search)

(My) 3 month Goal: 2.5 inches of growth.  Your goal does not have to be the same as mine--make your own if you'd like.

Side note: Hair usually grows about a 1/2 inch a month. The goal is to retain that growth and see a change in length your length.

How to meet that goal:

  • NO HEAT
  •  NO cutting (unless you have to eliminate single strand knots)
  • NO dry brushing/combing
  • Handle your hair with care
  • Wash when NECESSARY (I will be washing my hair in between protective styles, about once ever 2.5 weeks)
  • Deep conditioning 2x a month
  • Sealing moisture into the hair to eliminate breakage and dryness
  • Keeping ends tucked and in styles that are low maintenance
  • Taking vitamins and drinking ample amounts of water
Style Options:

  • Buns
  • Twists
  • Braided updos
  • Full weave installs (where hair is SEWN NOT GLUED)
If you have any other style option ideas please leave them in the comment box below.

Recording your growth:

The options for recording your growth are as follows-
  • Via email- I was thinking we could all check-in once a month with pictures of our growth, styles, tips and questions over email.
  • Blogs- if you are a blogger you can easily post your growth directly on your blog and link send me the to share with everyone who is participating.
  • YouTube- making growth videos is always a good way to share what's going on in your journey
  • Twitter- #naturalhair chat is another easy way to share what is going with you and your curls
Let me know which idea you like most in the comment box and we can go from there! The PS challenge will start on August 1st, 2011 and end on November 1st, 2011.  I would like the people who want to participate to leave their emails below so I can get in touch with everyone by the 31st of July. Pleas record your start length if you can. I have in a PS right now so I won't be able to until I take it down in a couple of weeks.  I am very excited to start this journey with you all, this is going to be fun!

Back At It...Albeit a Few Hairs Short!

Hi everyone! I have to say thank you for your patience in my absence. I had no idea how long I intended to be away but I sincerely appreciate all of you for hanging around! Being a mom is amazing and a LOT of hard work! So many new things to learn and I am finally starting to feel confident in my abilities. I love my baby boy and it is true what they say, EVERYTHING changes once you have a kid. Finally, welcome to all the new folks who have joined the site! I never dreamed when I started that anyone besides my mom would care to read what I had to say, let alone 1000+ followers, and I am humbled and flattered. Thank you all!

Speaking of changes, I am still adjusting to my new schedule, my new body, and my new hairline. Of all the things pregnancy and childbirth did to my physical appearance, hair loss was not one I seriously anticipated. I think we've all heard of post-partum hair shedding but I had no idea I would see clumps of hair literally fall out in my hands! Every time I wash I lose a significant amount of hair and it kinda freaks me out! I have always had so much hair, did not notice any real change during pregnancy, and didn't really expect to lose much after. Around month 3 post-partum, I noticed that things began to change.

I was taking down a set of mini twists that I'd had in for a few weeks. As I got to the ones framing my face, I noticed I was losing clumps of hair. I ran out of the bathroom with my hair in my hands, showing my husband in disbelief. "I'm BALD!", I screamed. Ok, well not really but I do have very short patches where my temples are. It's like a thin layer of peach fuzz is beginning to emerge but still quite see through!

My bday was last Friday and we went out on Saturday with the family to celebrate. Truthfully I had all but forgotten about the hair loss until I saw these pics:

(Pic 1- I got a cookbook! Is that a hint or something???
Pic 2- Blowing out the candle on my cupcake. I still have some pp weight to lose so portion control is my friend, lol)
I don't know if you can see but clearly I am missing some strands. I am not extremely bothered but I do plan on taking special care of these areas so I can increase growth. My plan includes eating healthy and continuing my prenatal vitamin (both are givens due to b'feeding), gentle styling, and massaging castor oil weekly into my scalp.

I perused YouTube to find some inspiration with the castor oil:

Seems like folks are getting good results. Hopefully after a few weeks these patchy parts will fill in! Out are tightly pulled back buns and puffs.

Have any of you ever experienced hair loss due to pregnancy or other causes? If so, what have you done to remedy it?

Brush Embroidery

I was working on brush embroidered cookies in ivory and gold when I had to stop and take pictures before the final step of applying the gold to the flowers. I felt this monochromatic look was equally stunning.

What's Cooking w/Trice (Carne con Queso)/ Natural Hair/ Sunday's Best

Hi Guys!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend!  Mine was pretty cool.  It started off with my adventurous trip out Friday night with my friend, Bernie, a Ladies Get-together on Saturday, and a good word at church on Sunday.

Saturday I hosted a Ladies get together with the some of the lovely women from my church.  I made the dip that's always requested when I have to provide a dish for something.
I call it Carne con Queso (Meat w/cheese)  :)

It is SO EASY AND QUICK to make.  Here are the ingredients. (rec. = recommendation)/ Estimated time to make 10-15 minutes!!!
  • Salsa (rec.PACE: Mild)
  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • About 4 oz of Cheese (rec. Velveeta Cheese)
  • Tortilla Chips
  • Seasoning of choice

 Directions:
1.) Lightly Season, brown and drain your ground beef.  (There is a significant amount of salt in your salsa and cheese, so you don't wanna over-season the meat.)
2.) Add your 4 oz. of cheese.  If you want a cheesier dip, feel free to add more. :)
3.) Add your salsa:  I usually add 3/4 but you could add the entire bottle if you'd like.

4.) Mix well!!!!! Plate and go to dipping!!!

Here is some of the other things prepared for the get together:
Tequila-Lime Chicken Wings, Chicken Salad Sandwiches, Assorted Fruit, Homemade Banana Bread, My Dip, Pizza Bites, and Cookies
I am wearing my hair in it's natural state right now! Although I rock extensions every now and again, I really do LOVE my natural hair and the ability to do both!!!
Yeah...my curls are pretty tight (Lots of shrinkage)

Here's what I wore to church on Sunday!

That's all for now guys!  I think the issue with my camera, isn't really an issue at all. It has to do with lighting so once I get that together, I think I'll be good to go!!!

Photobucket Have a FABULOUS week!!!
