Crumbling Medicine in Nigeria

There's rarely any good news on the health front in Nigeria. I'm on a mission to find others in Africa, and will write about Ghana's health insurance experiment soon. From all indications, disappointments abound there as well. But more on that later.

In Nigeria, there seems to be a new level of low quality being defined everyday. For example,
  1. Patients asked to bring their own blood?
  2. Patients asked to bring their own padding and gauze?
  3. Inadequate tests to ensure that blood types match, or that blood for transfusions are HIV free?

These are but a few of the many calamities that plague Nigerian citizens who need health care services. Please read one person's experience with his wife's delivery in an upscale Lagos hospital recently. This post is courtesy of the Nigeria Health Watch.
