Glamour Mag Controversy

I might be late on this but apparently Glamour magazine decided to "make amends" for editor Ashley Baker's racist comments regarding office hair do's and dont's. If you are unaware of what happened read this excerpt from http://jezebel.com/5078254/a-year-after-the-black-hair-controversy-glamour-marches-on:

Last August, Ashley Baker, an editor from Glamour magazine, visited a law firm to speak about the dos and don'ts of corporate fashion. While commenting on a slide show, a picture of a woman sporting an Afro popped up, and Baker called it a real no-no. She said the same thing about dreadlocks, and suddenly a storm of bad press swarmed Glamour. Last October, PortÆ’olio's Jeff Bercovici wrote: "Ashley is no racist, just a young writer who said something glib without considering how it would sound to someone from a different background." But you've got to wonder if Glamour is still smarting from the incident. The December issue features a "Glamover," in which they give a black "reader" a new look. Guess what? Marketing exec Nina Wales was given an Afro. (The article features a picture of the makeover.)

One of my classmates sent me an article from Glamour.com where they held a roundtable discussion on biased beauty standards featuring women from different ethnic backgrounds. In the article you can access the apology Letter from the Editor and also hear an audio clip of a segment aired on NPR discussing the issue. Like I said, you might have already seen this but I had not and I am glad that Glamour responded the way they did.

I guess this just goes to show that no matter how progressive something like Glamour magazine might be, unfortunately there are still some people out there who are unaware of how hurtful and ignorant such statements can be. All the more reason for us to continue to grow in love and acceptance of our natural selves and show the world that we are proud to be who we are. A teachable moment for everyone I must say.
