Have you ever had someone joke or poke fun of your natural hair? I was a "virgin" to the natural hair jokes until this week. This incident threw me WAY off and I was offended that someone would DARE make a joke about me and my hair (especially if we do NOT know or associate with one another.) I walked into a tattoo parlor and it was EMPTY, no customers were there and I didn't see any artist's. My hair was in a HUGE puff ball so I guess the Caucasian worker was caught off guard when he saw my massive hair. I proceeded to ask "Are any artists here to tattoo?" The artist that I DID NOT initially see popped his head around the corner and said sarcastically, "No artists are here but we BRAID HAIR..." Y'all should have SEEN MY FACE. It looked a lot like this>> -_-. I was shocked and asked to repeat himself but he just laughed it off. Granted I wasn't hit by the ignorant comment until AFTER I got back in my car and thought about what he had said. I think the fact that he was a Caucasian man, obviously poking fun at my curly hair made it sting a little. I thought to myself " Wow he assumes that I wear braids ONE because I am black and TWO because I choose to wear my hair a certain way." I can kind of giggle at it now but at first it blew my mind; especially because I come from a multi-racial family and have never experienced any discriminatory comments about me wearing my hair natural. Nevertheless, I still love my hair, LOL.
Do you have a story to share?
Post it below.
xoxo,
Alex
