Guest Blogger: Bree of Art of Being Cool

I was contacted last night by Bree, who runs the Art of Being Cool blog, to see if I would be interested in having her as a guest blogger. I am always looking for new folks to guest blog; having other's peoples work and thoughts on my site helps keep the content interesting and fresh. So I checked out the post she wanted me to feature,I loved it and agreed to have her. I think that you ladies will really find Bree's post helpful, if I get a good response to her work I would love to have her guest blog on the regular. Don't forget to check out her blog, it's pretty cool! (No pun intended, LOL)  Enjoy the post!

Tired of hiding those zits? Well my fellow cool people, I have a very unusual yet valid home remedy to help you stay cool and help your face stay clear! What is it you may ask? OIL!
How many people imagined slapping thick oil on your already greasy face? I know that it sounds crazy, and I thought the same thing as well, until I tried it. As most of my readers know, I just started a new job. Well, the job is 8 hours of intense hard labor in harsh conditions, and my face and skin has gone haywire! So like most of us do, I hit the internet for a solution to my pimply skin, and one of the solutions that I found was using oil to wash your face instead of a harsh acne product. The articles reasoned that the reason that our skin makes oil is because we need it; however using harsh chemicals dries out our skin and makes it even more prone to breakouts. Using a penetrating oil, like olive oil or grapeseed oil (put away the vegetable oil!) to wash your face will give you smooth skin and within a matter of days, you'll see a difference. All of my little white head pimples were gone in 2 days (I kid you not!) I tried this on my brother, who has acne, for one day and after that one use, we could already seen a difference in his skin!

Have you/would you ever try the Oil Cleansing Method?

Beauty with Nokomis: Oily Skin Control in the Summer

(courtesy of Essence Mag)

Tips for a Shine free face!

First things first! Start with a clean lightly moisturized face
You can skip the lotion and reach for some sunscreen ( i love Shiseido sunscreen in spf 60)
Next Oil Control starts before your foundation you can you use a primer such as Smash Box Photo finish or
a lot of ladies love milk of magnesia (I've never tried; it but I've heard great things!)

Now on to the MAKEUP!

When the warmer months hit the first thing that I do is ditch my beloved liquid foundation for a tinted Moisturizer
its not heavy and you don't have to worry about you pores getting clogged or your face melting off in the heat.
Or my other favorite summer option is to switch to a powder foundation like MAC's mineralized skin finish powder of studio fix
powder. You can also combine the two (tinted moisturizer and powder to achieve full coverage if thats something you want.
Another switch up you can make for controlling your oil is switching creme blush to powder blush,
the same goes for your highlighter and your eyebrows!

So we covered the skin care, the makeup and I know we all will still experience some type of oil so here are a few things you can
keep with you to fight the shine and soak up the oil as well as add to your makeup routine!

I personally love Sonia Kashuk oil blots you can pick them up at target they come in a cute pouch that fits inside your purse and they work great to soak up any oil.
Next up is Blot powder after you have used your blot paper dust some blot powder in the needed areas to stop the shine you can also pick up  Make Up For Ever HD Microfinishing Powder

(Please make sure that if you are going to use a blot powder that you do use blotting paper first,
as well as try to use a brush instead of the sponge that comes with it so that you do not transfer oil into your compact.)

A few products that Ive tested out and think they would be GREAT for any one with oily skin are
Make Up For Ever's All Mat, Smashbox Anti-Shine, Laura Mercier Secret Finish mattifier and Urban Decays De-Slick. You can check and TRY out all these products at a Sephora near you.
They are state the same claim, end shine and keep your face matter all day, while its more of a wish upon a star that it was all day they do work great at controlling the shine just keep blotting
paper near!

Ive heard great things about Cosmedicine (also sold at Sephora) and will be giving it a try and hopefully I can come back and update you guys on it!

Chic and Style with Ashley Semila: A Naturally Fashionable Easter

Easter is the turning point in our seasonal wardrobe. It is time to put away the dark colors and stand out in colorways that match our personal style. I love the orangy-peach in this dress by Dorothy Perkins and I think its daring but acceptable to pair it with a turquoise shoe like this one by Jessica Simpson! Rose gold accessories should be a staple in this seasons wardrobe and it looks amazing with these colors.

Many of us natural girls have a hard time pairing our gorgeous locks with attire suitable for the various holidays. Most people think Easter and think that hair should be soft and flowy but I beg to differ. Being a natural girl myself I am turning in the flat iron this year for a wavy twist out to go along with my Easter frock. I love the chic-ness of this low textured bun and nothing would do it a better service than to place a beautiful flower in its cuff. Ask Alex about her wonderful selection of hair flowers to accessorize your look this holiday!

xoxo Semila

Let Her Be...

Children are the vessels of wonder, excitement, and innocence.  They are clean slates to be whatever they want, to express themselves how they naturally feel and one of the worst things a parent or adult can do, and what we many times end up doing, is taint them with our issues, over-religion, politics, prejudices and problems in our perception.  In this we must include self image i.e. Hair. Hair and self-image/self esteem are highly connected especially in the African America community. Given that our hair is so unique we often associate hair, skin color, body/facial features with our “Blackness” and also with how we define beauty. Now, this isn’t about my preferences in Black women’s hair and this isn’t about when adult Black women alter the texture of their hair with either chemical, heat or use artificial hair for whatever personal reasons/preferences they may have.  My issue is when children are subjected to the extremely painful, dangerous, possibly permanently altering, and potentially self-image/esteem distorting methods used by their parents because they have been told this is what it takes to be beautiful, and a woman.

I remember watching Chris Rock’s “Good Hair” and seeing a girl around the age of seven getting a relaxer. I felt disgusted and horrified. The chemicals that comprise relaxer are known and proven to be extremely harmful to the hair, scalp, skin, eyes and even lungs from inhaling the fumes.  One doctor said that parents have asked about given children relaxers at ages as young as three-years-old.  A chemical mixture that has the potential to burn through the skin if left in too long applied to an infant’s head?!?!?! I’d like to quickly raise the question of why we don’t look at this as a form of child abuse. But, we’ll leave that for another discussion.

I’ve also noticed that there is a notion among young girls that straightening your hair signifies becoming a woman. Like, it is some sort of coming of age ritual. I’ve heard little girls say “My Auntie straightened her hair when she was 13.” and so on and so forth, so engrained in our subconscious and modern culture that we often times don’t think twice about it.  It seemed to me like the hair progression went from parted afro puffs, pony tails with knockers and barrettes or braids as a child, to once you were old enough it was straightened to be given the ‘hair of a woman’.

We live in the land of Barbie and Ken, Eurocentric standards of beauty, self-hate, auto-colonialism, poor proper Black representation in the media and an arsenal of other bullets aimed at our self-image and self worth. This makes it that much more important to surround our children and ourselves with beautiful positive Black images at home. I wish some mothers wouldn’t deem this process necessary for their daughters and instead let them be truly free to express themselves if even it’s not the mother’s preference. But, what if the mother thinks natural hair is ugly or doesn’t prefer it, what are they to do with the child? And, even then if they didn’t, would that change anything? Probably not considering young Black girls still have everything around them telling them their skin color, features and hair aren’t beautiful. I’ve heard cases of families strong in cultures and being natural, have girls that ask for their hair to be straightened because they just feel it’s what they are supposed to do. It’s a bit disheartening to realize that what many Black girls, and Black people in general, consider natural…is unnatural.  It’s extremely hard to be your natural self when you have everything around you telling you you shouldn’t be.

Maybe letting a daughter keep their hair natural for a while will help a mother realize the beauty in hers.  Maybe if we saw more people that looked like us, naturally, in the media, then we’d feel more comfortable and proud or at least feel more like there was an option. Maybe if there were then more of a mix, choice and option, then people wouldn’t feel like they held all of their “Blackness” in their hair. Maybe then wrongful negative and positive stigma wouldn’t be ascribed to straight hair and natural hair. Maybe then there would no longer be such thing as “good hair” and “bad hair” and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Maybe…

Spring Fresh Face

Spring is here! and although it doesn't quite feel like it, its time to pull out the pastels, shimmer and bronzer for that ultimate sun kissed look!
My favorite spring time look is great for every day, its lights no over done eyes or heavy lip colors and blushes here but its easy to go from day to night if you want to add
a little more drama! Heres what you need!

  • tinted moisturizer (or a light-medium coverage foundation)
  • concealer (preferebly one shade lighter than your complexion)
  • translucent setting powder
  • brown or black eye liner
  • favorite mascara
  • eye brow pencil or brow shader
  •  light pink or peach colored blush
  • highlighter (this is optional)
  • your favorite nude/pink lipstick or gloss
***please note its optional if you want to use brushes for your application, but clean hands are just as good!

Simple step by step instructions

  1. wash/dry face and hands
  2. apply concealer to any dark/red spots
  3. apply tinted moisturizer (apply moisturizer if using foundation then apply your foundation)
  4. apply lighter shade concealer under eyes, on the bridge of your nose, under your bottom lip and around your eyebrows and on your eye lid (blend blend blend!)
  5. set your concealer so that it does not crease or crack with setting power with powder puff or kabuki brush
  6. line your TOP lash line only
  7. apply mascara
  8. apply highlighter of choice under eye and on bridge of your nose
  9. apply blush on the apple of your cheeks
  10. last but not least apply your lipstick/gloss
*last minute tip! another trick thats great for spring makeup looks is to apply white eye liner on your lower lash line, it will make your eyes look awake and for those with small eyes make your eyes appear to be larger!

Guest Blogger Topic: Natural Hair and Dating

Natural Hair and Dating
By TwistedMarie
My natural hair story started about three years ago when I had suffered a bad salon experience and wanted to see how long I could go without a relaxer. While transitioning I met a guy and, we had been dating for about a year and a half when I mentioned to him casually in conversation one day that I was fed up with these two textures and planned to cut my hair the following weekend. He looked me square in the eye and said “I think your hair is fine the way it is, and I don’t know how I would like it if it wasn’t straight!” Instantly I felt taken back and laughed said “ok umm sure and brushed off the comment.” That following weekend without any hesitation I BC’ed and everybody around me loved it, he had been out of town that weekend so when we met to go to the movies I thought nothing of it. His face was in shock when he noticed that I had cut my hair and the first thing out of his mouth was “why did you do that to your hair? I knew I wouldn’t like it like that.” I had enjoyed the compliments I had gotten on my hair and the ease of styling since my BC so with the biggest smile on my face I said “the hair is gone, I love my curls. Why are you letting hair define us?” Right in front of the theater I decided to choose my natural hair over him!
This was a starting point for me in my natural journey, I had always thought that the way I wore my hair was simply my choice. Natural hair is a lifestyle for me and I feel like dating should not affect how I rock my curls, my choice of hair style should not cause conflict but if it does my hair wins! Fast forward two years later I am still enjoying my curls, this bad experience has only made me love my curls more. Have any of you ladies experienced a similar situation? How did you choose to handle it?
