This post is geared towards the naturals who are transitioning, ready to BC and for those who JUST BC'd. I am writing today about SCAB hair. If you are not familiar with the term, I will explain it.
Scab has is a term that is used for the new growth that comes in
after having a relaxer or any "chemical treatment".
In this case, we are talking about relaxers.
Scab hair can be your new growth for about 6 months after BC'ing.
Most of the times scab hair is dry, coarser than your natural texture and darker in color.
This does not mean that your hair will permanently stay like that, after a few months
you will be able to feel the difference in your hair textures.
My personal definition of Scab Hair is "dead hair".
I feel that scab hair is basically damaged hair that is being pushed through the scalp.
There is no real solution to scab hair other than keeping your hair hydrated and moisturized.
STAY AWAY from products with alcohol, silicones and sulfates.
When I first BC'd I had scab hair and I used LOTS of WATER, natural butters and oils like
shea butter, coconut oil and jojoba oil.
I tried to keep my hair moisturized.
Moisture is IMPORTANT when I comes to hair because
if your hair gets too dry it will break off.
I also kept my hair in protective styles for the first several months of me being natural.
I found that the low manipulation styles (braids, weave, ect)
really helped me.
My hair flourished as well.
After about 5 months, I noticed that my scab hair was on the very ends of my hair.
As the months went on I made sure to snip the ends off when needed.
My scab hair is GONE now and I am very pleased to say
that my hair is soft and fluffy now. :-)
I hope this info is helpful and can be passed along to those struggling with Scab Hair.
Do not let scab hair discourage your from continuing on your natural hair journey.
Going natural takes courage!
You can do it!
