1.Tell me about YOU
I'm a journalist and producer for a local news network in Washington, DC.
I grew up in the DMV area and attended college in Tampa, FL. Besides my hair addiction, I LOVE shoes. I currently own over a hundred pair. .
2.Tell me your hair care regimen (do you use heat, natural products, ect...)
I don't have a strict set regimen. The only thing consistent is my weekly deep conditioning treatment. I've noticed that I retain much more moisture, and my hair is healthier as a result. I'll typically do styles like twists or twist outs during the week. I almost always do them on freshly cowashed hair. When I'm lazy and fail to twist my hair, I'll rock a puff.
3. Tell me your texture and what works best on your hair type
I have soo many textures! Its frizzy, curly, coily, wavy and crazy thick. I'm not big on hair typing but I say I'm close to 4a/b. My hair loves anything with aloe, honey, olive oil. I tend to use moisturizing products. I love Qhemet Amla and Olive Heavy Cream. Shea Moisture Conditioning Curl and Style Milk. I normally use a gel based product like ORS Lock and Twist Gel for my twists because I get more definition, 2nd day hair, and less frizz.
I have to be careful with glycerin in the summer because my hair will expand like no other.
4. Tell me the reaction you got when first going natural
I did it over a weekend. My family saw it first. Most loved it, I was unsure of it because my hair had never been that short. Only a few people knew I was going natural so it was a shock to most. I'd often get "why'd you do that?" Two of my aunts are also natural so they were supportive.
My coworkers loved it. People did offer help lol this one white guy in particular told me it looked nice, I just needed some "product." LOL I laugh because he was right. I learned that once I grew to love and accept my hair, so did those around me. It was definitely a mental transition as well as physical for me. Now you can't tell me nothin'!.
6. Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?
I began growing my hair out in May 2008. That's when I got my first weave. My second weave I bought some kinky curly hair. At this point I was 3 months post. I decided I did not want to relax so that my leave out would blend better. Ok 4 months of new growth and I'm in love with my texture and curiosity sets in. I began stalking fotkis of naturals and pondering if I really could do it. I had a support group of fellow transitioners online. I BC'ed May 29th 2009. So roughly 1 year.
7. What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?
